Book Review: The Farm by Emily McKay – ****** 5 Stars

Author: Emily McKay
Published: December 4th 2012
Blurb: Life was different in the Before: before vampires began devouring humans in a swarm across America; before the surviving young people were rounded up and quarantined. These days, we know what those quarantines are—holding pens where human blood is turned into more food for the undead monsters, known as Ticks. Surrounded by electrical fences, most kids try to survive the Farms by turning on each other…
And when trust is a thing of the past, escape is nearly impossible.
Lily and her twin sister Mel have a plan. Though Mel can barely communicate, her autism helps her notice things no one else notices—like the portion of electrical fence that gets turned off every night. Getting across won’t be easy, but as Lily gathers what they need to escape, a familiar face appears out of nowhere, offering to help…
Carter was a schoolmate of Lily’s in the Before. Managing to evade capture until now, he has valuable knowledge of the outside world. But like everyone on the Farm, Carter has his own agenda, and he knows that behind the Ticks is an even more dangerous threat to the human race…
This week I sat down with my husband to record some audio comments about this book. As usual we have tried to avoid giving away spoilers about this story!

Oh my goodness, I just bought this one at the weekend! Heard such amazing things about it so if you’ve given it 5 stars that I’m more than liable to give it the same
Vampires seem to be a lot less scary ever since Twilight so I’m interested to see how they turn out…
Fab review!
YAY! I hope you love it as much as we did!
Oh my gosh! I know I don’t comment often but listening to you two talk out a book is always such a joy. The Farm was not on my want list until this. Also great picture review as always, Alisa.
Thank you! I loved this book and I hope you do as well!
Great review. For some reason I had no idea this was about vamps.
The Vampires in this are really different, much more grimm and less romantic!
This book sounds interesting. I like that Lily and her sister are close. But I really don’t like dystopians. They freak me out!!!!
This one has some gory moments so if you are not a dystopian fan I don’t think you would like it! The relationship between Mel and Lily was my favorite thing about the book!
Glad to see/hear you enjoyed this book. It sounds like it has so many interesting elements! Great review!
It was nice to read a book in which the vampires are scary and threatening!
I enjoyed this book too. I really liked your discussion with your husband. HIS VOICE just makes it very easy to listen to. WOW! Great job.
LOL I think he has a lovely voice but total bias I admit LOL Thank you!!
I liked this one too, and I’m happy to see you rate it 5 stars. I thought the sister relationship was a highlight also, and I think I heard Lily plays a bigger role in the sequel. The way you illustrated the characters is exactly how I imagined them!
YAY! I can’t wait for the sequel and I am so glad the pictures fit your imagination of the book! YAY!!
I like frightening. Vampires. I will have to check this out!
They are freaky and scary! I think you would like it!
I’m so glad that you enjoyed this one. I really can’t wait to get my hands on it since it sounds so fabulous. Great review and I love the scary vampire picture!
Thank you! It was a really good book, I hope you like it if you read it!

I’m almost through this one- overall, I like it! I definitely appreciate the vampires-who-aren’t-sparkly-and-or-love-interests thing; I was getting really sick of that. The ticks are terrifying. Most of the things I haven’t liked have been little, nit-picky things; I think the story is fantastic, and I’m glad to hear there’s a sequel coming (because I can already see the story won’t be finished in the few chapters I have left!)
