Book Review: The Farm by Emily McKay – ****** 5 Stars

The Farm by Emily McKay

Author:  Emily McKay

Published:  December 4th 2012

Blurb: Life was different in the Before: before vampires began devouring humans in a swarm across America; before the surviving young people were rounded up and quarantined. These days, we know what those quarantines are—holding pens where human blood is turned into more food for the undead monsters, known as Ticks. Surrounded by electrical fences, most kids try to survive the Farms by turning on each other…

And when trust is a thing of the past, escape is nearly impossible.

Lily and her twin sister Mel have a plan. Though Mel can barely communicate, her autism helps her notice things no one else notices—like the portion of electrical fence that gets turned off every night. Getting across won’t be easy, but as Lily gathers what they need to escape, a familiar face appears out of nowhere, offering to help…

Carter was a schoolmate of Lily’s in the Before. Managing to evade capture until now, he has valuable knowledge of the outside world. But like everyone on the Farm, Carter has his own agenda, and he knows that behind the Ticks is an even more dangerous threat to the human race…

This week I sat down with my husband to record some audio comments about this book. As usual we have tried to avoid giving away spoilers about this story!

  1. Oh my goodness, I just bought this one at the weekend! Heard such amazing things about it so if you’ve given it 5 stars that I’m more than liable to give it the same :)
Vampires seem to be a lot less scary ever since Twilight so I’m interested to see how they turn out…
    Fab review!

  2. I liked this one too, and I’m happy to see you rate it 5 stars. I thought the sister relationship was a highlight also, and I think I heard Lily plays a bigger role in the sequel. The way you illustrated the characters is exactly how I imagined them!

  5. I’m almost through this one- overall, I like it! I definitely appreciate the vampires-who-aren’t-sparkly-and-or-love-interests thing; I was getting really sick of that. The ticks are terrifying. Most of the things I haven’t liked have been little, nit-picky things; I think the story is fantastic, and I’m glad to hear there’s a sequel coming (because I can already see the story won’t be finished in the few chapters I have left!)
