Book Club Extra: Fantasy Worlds

pmrfantasy

We thought it might be fun to start a series of bookish discussions related to the books I’ve been reading. Each week we’ll be discussing a topic related to one of the books I have reviewed, sharing our thoughts and asking you for yours!

This week I reviewed Cassandra Rose Clarke’s fantasy adventure The Assassin’s Curse and this week’s discussion point is: Fantasy Worlds

Or download it from here: Book Club Extra 004 – Fantasy Worlds

Also, A Poll!

Firstly, thanks to everyone for the lovely responses we’ve had in the comments and on Twitter over the last few weeks. We love reading your thoughts and feedback! One thing that several people have mentioned is that they think it would be nice to have other bloggers included in the audio.

We were interested in the idea and wanted to ask your thoughts about it. Would you like to hear an expanded discussion including comments from other bloggers (ie. as one longer audio clip)? Would you prefer two separate discussions – one with myself and Aidan and the other collecting any community thoughts? Or do you want things to stay as they are?

Finally – if you do want change!, would you be interested in contributing yourself? Let us know in the poll and comments below. :)

  1. I got Shadow and Bone at the library today! I have to get some fairy tale reading done, but I hope to read it soon. :) So glad it made the fantastic fantasy world list. :) But no LOTR mention! Probably because you already included it in a PMR discussion? I love the Discworld books too, and was excited to see you guys picked Mort for the book cover – it is probably my favorite Discworld book, though I haven’t read them all yet!

I would love to read or hear other people’s contributions for the Extra, I’m just afraid at the moment of not having much to contribute myself. :) It’s a great idea of a way to include other bloggers!

    • Yay!! I hope I haven’t over hyped it and that you enjoy it :) I think it’s really exciting at the beginning, then it gets slowww in the middle but the end is really exciting! :) Yay for the fairy tale readings, looking forward to your reviews! Exactly, I wanted to pick something different! I had never read the discworld series before I met Aidan and now I love them, though I haven’t read as many of the books as he has!
Thank you for voting! We just wanted to get a sense of whether or not we would actually get comments to use..if people are just wanting to listen then we will just keep it as is! :)

    • Middle Earth is a great choice and frankly I’m surprised at myself for not thinking of it when we were compiling this list. Perhaps that reflects that I read my three choices as a child and only started Lord of the Rings when I was in college (and The Hobbit last year)?

Alisa tells me that she did consider it but opted not to use it for exactly the reason you suggest – she felt like she had talked about it too recently. :)

  3. THIS IS THE COOLEST FEATURE EVER. I recently read Shadow and Bone and Daughter of Smoke and Bone. While I wasn’t madly in love with either, they did have some really fantastic world building. I loved the whole Grisha thing going on in Smoke and Bone. I think it would be really interesting to find out more about that world and the various groups of soldiers.

    • Thank you!! I think so as well and that is what I am hoping for the next book! If you have a chance could you answer the survey above, I am looking for people who are interested to contribute to Book Club Extra!

  4. I’ve never tried running into dressers to take me into fantasy worlds, but I did spend a lot of time writing stories about secret passage ways and staircases that led to secret realms or gardens. In the same vein as the Narnia series, I think if I were to go into a fantasy world I would want to visit Rivendale, just to see the gorgeous landscape and clothing. I think one of the reasons that I love The Magician King by Lev Grossman, is this very idea of entering a world one has fantasized about living in.
